BROWARD CULTURAL DIVISION AND TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
This item supports the Board's value of "Cultivating community culture, arts, recreation, and life-long learning" and goals relating to providing diverse artistic, cultural, educational, and historical amenities and programs that contribute to a vibrant, multi-cultural, and economically-viable community.
This action is for approval of the proposed design of site-specific functionally integrated artwork, in an amount not to exceed $175,000 (estimated amount of $160,000 for art and $15,000 for contingency), for the new Transit Center located at the intersection of State Road 7 (US-441) and NW 12th Street in Lauderhill, Florida. The project will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the new facility, and improve customer experience for transit users and the community at large.
Exhibit 1 includes the two proposed artwork designs showing nighttime and daytime visuals by the artist, Douglas Kornfeld. The proposed artwork, Dancin’, will consist of five 14’ tall stainless steel dancing figures to be installed in clusters at the Lauderhill Transit Center.
Mr. Kornfeld’s design will vary for each figure reflecting the diversity of the community and showing a variety of dance poses expressing joy, ecstasy, elation, triumph, and euphoria. The dancing figures will be made of 6’’x 6’’ stainless steel square tubes and will be lighted at night. The proposed designs may slightly vary based on number of factors, including community input, engineering issues and relevant approval requirements by government agencies.
A Call to Artists was issued on March 27, 2018, which garnered 36 applicants. Mr. Kornfeld and his design were selected by the Artist Selection Panel on June 25, 2018, by the Public Art & Design Committee on July 11, 2018; by the Broward Cultural Council Executive Committee on July 19, 2018; and by the Broward Cultural Council on September 6, 2018.
