Section 43.1 of the Broward County Administrative Code currently provides for Broward County and each municipality therein to charge a fee in connection with permits issued pursuant to the Florida Building Code of $0.68 for each $1,000, or fraction thereof, of total construction cost associated with the building permit. The revenue generated from the fee is deposited into a special fund for the exclusive use and benefit of the Board of Rules and Appeals.
On May 10, 2018, the Broward County Board of Rules and Appeals unanimously recommended the fee be reduced to $0.65 for each $1,000 of total construction costs, and that the current fee of $50 charged to file an appeal be eliminated, effective October 1, 2018. This is the first decrease to the fee sought by the Board of Rules and Appeals since 1987. The fee established in 1987 was $0.35 assessed for each $1,000 of total construction costs". In 2009, the Board of Rules and Appeals recommended and the Board of County Commissioners approved an increase of the fee to $0.60 for each $1,000 of total construction costs. In 2012, the Board of Rules and Appeals and the Broward County Commission approved an increase of the fee to its current $0.68 for each $1,000 of total of construction.
