BROWARD CULTURAL DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION
This item supports the Board's value of "Cultivating community culture, arts, recreation and life-long learning" and goals relating to providing diverse artistic, cultural, educational and historical amenities and programs that contribute to a vibrant, multi-cultural and economically-viable community.
This action is for approval of the design proposal for a site-specific artwork located at the Port Everglades Cruise Terminal 25.
Exhibit 1 is the design proposal by Artist Vanessa Till Hooper. The project will result in the transformation of two sections of an approximately 261’ long wall located in the Cruise Terminal 25 check-in hall (wall section one is 96’ long and wall section two is 165’ long). The wall height varies between 11 and 16’ high. Cruise Terminal 25 will be the primary home for Celebrity Cruise Inc.’s Celebrity Edge, a revolutionary new ship with a luxury cruise concept.
The artwork features a stylized world map fabricated from perforated aluminum that covers the wall, with an interactive Light-emitting diode (LED) backlighting component. The backlighting is used to represent how the sun illuminates the earth at different times of the day. It can be controlled by viewer’s cell phones to move sequentially east or west, thus lighting up a section of the map relating to a specific international time zone. The lighting can also be programed to move east or west automatically across the map of the earth, stopping briefly in each time zone and eventually crossing over the international date line.
A Call to Artists was issued on September 20, 2017, which garnered 20 applicants. Vanessa Till Hooper was approved by the Artist Selection Panel on December 14, 2017. Her design was approved by the Public Art & Design Committee on January 10, 2018. The Broward Cultural Council approved the design on January 4, 2018. |
