THE LIBRARIES DIVISION RECOMMENDS THE APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.
Pursuant to the Administrative Code, the Libraries Division requests that the Board formally accept two generous donations for the Broward County Libraries Division. One donation is from the Friends of the Northwest Regional Friends of the Library, Inc. and a donation from Mr. Ross Parker, each valued at more than $500. Motions A and B support the Board's vision to create a community culture with vibrant arts, recreation and learning opportunities.
The Northwest Regional Friends of the Library, Inc., are donating a Maker Gear M2 3D Printer and LCD Interface, for public use at the Northwest Regional Library Creation Station. This donation will enhance existing technology available for the public's use at the Creation Station, which includes: AV recording equipment and editing software, electric guitar and digital drum kit, and a 3D printer. The Friends' generosity results in a cost avoidance for Broward County in the amount of $1,924. Library Friends groups support the Libraries Division through sponsorship of special projects, local branch programming, library staff development, advocacy for library issues and encourage volunteerism.
Mr. Ross Parker has generously donated two sculptures, "Lady Nita" and "Ndebele Chief" by Zimbabwean artist James Tandi for display at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center (AARLCC). Mr. Parker provided an appraisal that values these sculptures at $39,000. These two sculptures are one of a kind and made of verdite which is a green ornamental stone found in Africa. They will be added to the AARLCC collection. The Board previously accepted donations of sculptures by the same artist on the following dates: June 5, 2007, Agenda Item No. 19; on November 13, 2008, Agenda Item No. 18B; and on March 8, 2016, Agenda Item No. 19.
