Summary Explanation/Background
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND GROWTH MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

Approval of this item supports the Commission’s Value of “Encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection” and Goal 3: Increase water quality protection efforts and lead creative approaches to water storage and aquifer recharge, as well as diversification of water supplies, regionally, and Goal 4: Educate, through a variety of means, about the fragile South Florida ecosystems and impacts of severe weather, sea level rise and climate change on the region.

This item recognizes the cost share support provided by event sponsors to promote and host the P3 Eco-Challenge Awards Ceremony; an annual event to encourage environmental education and resource conservation throughout Broward County, by recognizing schools and teachers that are leaders in promoting sustainability. Unanticipated revenue in the amount of $14,750 will be recognized in the Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division’s Contract Fund.

The Broward P3 (Preserving Our Planet for Posterity) Eco-Challenge Awards Recognition Ceremony is a joint effort between the Environmental Planning and Community Resilience Division and the School Board of Broward County, in support of the interagency partnership agreement between the County and the School Board approved on December 11, 2012 (Agenda Item No. 16). The Ceremony was held on May 10, 2017 and was an event to recognize and reward schools, teachers, students, administrators, and volunteers for their efforts to learn about and implement environmentally sustainable measures and green initiatives within their schools and communities. The school challenge entails demonstrating participation in or implementation of different sustainability metrics based on a rubric composed of six comprehensive categories: School Grounds Enhancement; School Sustainability; Curriculum Integration; Community Involvement; Administrative Support; and Innovation.

Hosting of the P3 Eco-Challenge Awards Recognition Ceremony 2016 resulted in costs of $14,750 that were budgeted for expenditure and are reflected in the Budget Resolution. Sponsorships were received from public and private partners in accordance with Advantage Marketing Guidelines and included support from JM Family Enterprises, The National Wildlife Federation, Everglades Park, Hazen & Sawyer, Marine Industries Association of South Florida, Calvin Giordano Associates, Curriculum Associates, Allstate Resource Management, Salvation Army, Promethean, Lakeshore Learning, Citrix, and Miller Legg. Costs included printing, promotional materials, prizes for schools, students, and teachers, and other miscellaneous costs.
