MOTION TO ADOPT Resolution No. 2018-227 the title of which is as follows: (Commisssioner Rich)
 
A RESOLUTION OF THE BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS OF BROWARD COUNTY, FLORIDA, OPPOSING THE ADDITION OF A CITIZENSHIP QUESTION TO THE NEXT DECENNIAL CENSUS; DIRECTING THE COUNTY ADMINISTRATOR TO TRANSMIT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION TO ALL MEMBERS OF CONGRESS REPRESENTING BROWARD COUNTY RESIDENTS; AND PROVIDING FOR SEVERABILITY AND AN EFFECTIVE DATE.

Formal Board approval is necessary for the adoption of a Resolution.

Enables the adoption of the above Resolution.

Recently, the U.S. Department of Commerce announced that it would include a citizenship question on the 2020 Census. Inclusion of the citizenship question on the 2020 Census will discourage undocumented immigrants from filling out the 2020 Census. An undercount of the population for Broward County and the State of Florida could result in decreased representation in Congress for Broward County residents, fewer electoral votes for the State of Florida, and a smaller share of the billions of dollars in federal funds allocated annually based in part on census data. Through this Resolution, the Board expresses its opposition to the inclusion of a citizenship question and directs the County Administrator to send a copy of this Resolution to all members of Congress representing Broward County residents.
