Requested Action
A. MOTION TO ADOPT Resolution No. 2014-243 of the Board of County Commissioners of Broward County, Florida, accepting a donation from seven library support groups totaling $5,821, to be deposited into the Broward County Library Trust Fund for the use and benefit of the Libraries Division in support of Library staff conference travel; authorizing the County Administrator to take all administrative and budgetary actions required to implement same; and providing for severability and an effective date. (Commission Districts 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8)

B. MOTION TO ADOPT Resolution No. 2014-244 of the Board of County Commissioners of Broward County, Florida, accepting a donation from four library support groups totaling $7,311, to be deposited into the Broward County Library Trust Fund for the use and benefit of the Libraries Division in support of Library staff conference travel; authorizing the County Administrator to take all administrative and budgetary actions required to implement same; and providing for severability and an effective date. (Commission Districts 2, 5, 7, and 8)

Why Action is Necessary
Chapter 18, Part III, Section 18.63 of the Broward County Administrative Code stipulates that donations valued at $500 or more shall be accepted by Resolution of the Board of County Commissioners.

Summary Explanation/ Background
THE LIBRARIES DIVISION RECOMMENDS THE APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.

Pursuant to the Administrative Code, the Libraries Division requests that the Board formally accept donations from library support groups for staff conference travel.

With respect to Motion A, Friends of the Libraries groups have generously donated a total of $5,821 to support staff travel to the annual Florida Library Association Conference that will be held in Lake Buena Vista, FL on May 7 - May 9, 2014. Friends groups have made donations in varying amounts in support of this staff development opportunity, including: Friends of the North Regional/BC Library, Inc., Northwest Regional Friends of the Library, Inc., Friends of Southwest Regional Library, Inc., Friends of South Regional-Broward College Library, Inc., Friends of the Dania Beach Paul DeMaio Library, Inc., Friends of the Broward County Library, Inc. and Friends of the Miramar Library, Inc.

Motion B recognizes and formally accepts four generous donations from library support groups that have donated funding for travel to the annual American Library Association Conference that will be held in Las Vegas, NV on June 26 - July 1, 2014.   Support groups have made donations in varying amounts for this staff development opportunity, including: Friends of the North Regional/BC Library, Inc., Friends of Southwest Regional Library, Inc., Broward Public Library Foundation, and Friends of the Miramar Library, Inc. 

Detailed information regarding the staff traveling to the annual Florida Library Association Conference and the annual American Library Association Conference is attached to this agenda report as Exhibit 5. The Friends of the Library volunteer organizations support the Libraries Division through sponsorship of special projects, local branch programming, library staff development, advocacy for library issues and encourage volunteerism.

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary:
As a result of Motions A and B, a total of $13,132 will be deposited in the Broward County Library Trust Account (6350-025-7141).
