Why Action is Necessary
Pursuant to Section 41.01 of the Broward County Administrative Code, waivers of fixed-route, directly-operated bus fares must be approved by the Board of County Commissioners (Board).
What Action Accomplishes
This action will allow the Transit Division to provide free bus service for visiting military personnel during Fleet Week 2017.

Summary Explanation/Background
In a letter to Commissioner Chip LaMarca dated January 31, 2017, Ms. Mary Anne Gray, Executive Director, Broward Navy Days Inc., has requested the Board’s waiver of bus fares for military personnel during Fleet Week Port Everglades 2017 (May 1st to May 7th 2017). Historically, the Board has approved this request.
 
As an extension of Broward County government’s appreciation to military personnel that visit Broward County during Fleet Week, this action provides a waiver of bus fares on Broward County’s fixed-route buses for military personnel wearing a uniform or producing proper identification during this time period.

Staff estimates minimal loss of revenue (less than $1,000) to provide the proposed free bus service for the military from May 1st to May 7th 2017.
