On December 30, 2015, a Broward County transit bus struck the rear of a vehicle that was stopped at a red traffic light. The Plaintiff was a passenger on the bus, and has asserted that she has suffered injuries to her neck, back, left knee, and left shoulder. The Plaintiff has undergone substantial medical treatment including neck surgery. The Plaintiff has a weakened and hoarse voice, which is an alleged side effect of her neck procedure. The Plaintiff claims her weakened and hoarse voice negatively impacts her quality of life. The Plaintiff's treating surgeon has opined that the Plaintiff is at a substantially heightened risk of requiring additional neck surgery in the future. Medical expenses, to date, are approximately $213,000. The Plaintiff has agreed to release Broward County from all claims arising from this accident in exchange for $154,500, subject to Board approval. The Risk Management Division and the Transit Division concur with and recommend approval of this settlement.
