On January 6, 2017, a passenger flying from Anchorage, Alaska, into the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport killed five people and injured six people in the Terminal 2 baggage claim with a handgun that he had checked into cargo during his flight. An additional 35 people were injured in the chaos that followed. A lack of communication as well as misinformation spread through word-of-mouth and social media have been cited as potential causes of the disorder following the shooting.
Mayor Bogen has suggested using the monitors in the airport to inform employees if an incident is occurring with a color-coding system.
