Summary Explanation/Background
PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL.

This item supports the Board of County Commissioners' Value of "cooperatively delivering an efficient and accessible regional intermodal transportation network" with the Goal of supporting "the development, design and construction of sustainable, multi-modal transportation facilities throughout the County, to meet the demands of residents, travelers, and businesses."

Copans Road from State Road 7 to Lyons Road is a four-lane County road in the Cities of Coconut Creek and Pompano Beach. West Prospect Road from State Road 7 to Commercial Boulevard is a four-lane County road in the Cities of North Lauderdale and Fort Lauderdale and becomes a two-lane road in the City of Tamarac. Broward County, the Broward Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO), the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), and the respective Cities of Coconut Creek, Pompano Beach, North Lauderdale, Fort Lauderdale and Tamarac have collaborated to develop the two projects to improve bicycle and pedestrian safety along these roads. As part of these cooperative efforts, FDOT will be responsible for project design and construction administration, the MPO will provide the funding for construction, and County will continue to own and maintain the roads after construction of the proposed improvements. The projects will be implemented with no change in the number of travel lanes.

Prior to proceeding with the projects, the MPO and FDOT require a resolution showing support from the Board of County Commissioners. Staff from the County's Complete Streets Team have reviewed the proposed improvements and support the implementation of the projects. Approval of this Resolution will formally affirm the County's support for the two projects.

The Resolution has been reviewed and approved as to form by the County Attorney's Office.
