Summary Explanation/Background
This item supports the County Commission's Value: Encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection by implementing the following County Commission Goals:  a) seek funding for, implement policies and pursue projects promoting, the use of alternative energy, resource conservation, sustainable practices and environmental protection; and b) increase water quality protection efforts and lead creative approaches to water storage and aquifer recharge, as well as diversification of water supplies, regionally.
 
The Resolution supports the development of a Lake Okeechobee Systems Operation Manual that will balance the congressionally authorized purposes of Lake Okeechobee operations, including water supply, environment, economic impacts, flood protection, and coastal discharge minimization. The Resolution opposes drastic lowering of Lake Okeechobee’s water level, operations that would increase the risk of saltwater intrusion, and restrictions on recreational and commercial fishing.
