THE HUMAN SERVICES DEPARTMENT AND OFFICE OF EVALUATION AND PLANNING RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE ACTION.
This action supports the Commission Value: "Approaching human services collaboratively and compassionately, with special emphasis on the most vulnerable," and Commission Goal: "Deliver evidence-based services to the public, and connect customers and their family members, to sustainable support, with special emphasis on financial supports."
The purpose of the Florida Atlantic University (FAU) Field Practicum and Internship Program is to provide Masters and Bachelors level students the opportunity to work in a professional setting to develop and demonstrate skills in the Human Services field, integrate the theories and practices learned in an out of the classroom, develop commitment to the profession, understand the diversity of the Broward community and the role diversity plays in the delivery of human services. The program also helps participants understand how administrative processes and policies impact delivery of services and professional relationships within the community. This program will necessitate the placement of undergraduate and graduate students within the HSD to receive direct experience through training and supervision from HSD staff.
Entering into this Agreement with FAU provides a mutually beneficial relationship to both the County and students. The social work practicum and internship program will enhance service capacity within the HSD. In return the university practicum or internship students receive both supervised and self-directed learning opportunities while participating in the program. HSD is committed to helping to position Broward County as an employer of choice within the human services profession. A primary goal is to retain students in paid positions upon their graduation.
This Agreement has been approved as to form by the Risk Management Division and Office of County Attorney.
