MOTION TO APPROVE Funding in the amount of $350,000 for a Complex Trial Courtroom to be constructed on the 17th Floor of the New Broward County Courthouse and authorize the County Administrator to execute the administrative or budgetary actions needed for funding and implementation of the design for the Complex Trial Courtroom at the West Building. (Commission District 7)

ACTION:  (T-10:41 AM)  Approved. The Board requested that staff go forward with the architectural design, as well  as made request for phased funding.  In addition, the Board requested submitting a request to the Florida Legislature so as to fund a portion of construction costs.  Further, the Board requested that the County Attorney's Office explore legal options as to reimbursement of furnishings.  (Refer to minutes for full discussion.)

VOTE:  5-2.  Commissioners Sharief and Udine voted no.  Commissioner Geller was not present.  Vice-Mayor Holness was not present during the vote. 

ACTION:  (T-11:17 AM)  Vice-Mayor Holness requested being shown voting in the affirmative. 

VOTE:  6-2.

Board of County Commissioners’ approval of funding for Capital Improvement Projects is required.

Provides funding in the amount of $350,000 for design services necessary to prepare construction contract documents for a Complex Trial Courtroom and authorizes the County Administrator to approve budget transfers and other administrative actions as may be necessary to determine a funding source and implement the required budget transfers.

On February 21, 2019, staff met with the Chief Judge of the 17th Judicial Circuit to finalize an approved concept drawing for a Complex Trial Courtroom proposed for construction on the 17th Floor of the New Broward County Courthouse.

The proposed Motion will provide funding in the amount of $350,000 to develop the approved concept drawing into construction contract documents suitable for bidding. The proposed Motion also authorizes the County Administrator to take any and all actions, including approval and execution of budget resolutions, budget transfers and other administrative documents as may be necessary to determine an appropriate funding source and implement the required budget transfers.

The proposed motion is presented to expedite the design phase work of this proposed project, which is projected to be approximately eight months. The remainder of the estimated $5,600,000 project budget for construction and other miscellaneous costs will be established through the County’s Fiscal Year 2020 Budget Process, should the Board approve the construction.
