Broward County Commission Regular Meeting

A. MOTION TO RETROACTIVELY APPROVE Grant Acceptance Agreement between the American Library Association and Broward County for the Libraries Division to serve as a host for Phase II of the NASA @ My Library program held at the Margate Catharine Young Branch Library between November 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020; authorize the County Administrator to take all administrative or budgetary actions; and delegate authority to the Libraries Division Director to execute same. (Commission District 2)

VOTE:  8-0.  Commissioner Furr was not present during the vote.

B. MOTION TO ADOPT budget Resolution No. 2018-502 within the NASA Science Grant Fund to appropriate revenue in the amount of $1,000 for the purpose of hosting the NASA @ My Library program.

ACTION:  (T-11:59 AM)  Approved.

VOTE:  8-0.  Commissioner Furr was not present during the vote.

Board approval is required to approve agreements and adopt budget Resolutions.

This action allows the Broward County Library to continue serving as a host site for the NASA @ My Library Program and accept a stipend associated with Phase II of the project.

THE LIBRARIES DIVISION RECOMMENDS THE RETROACTIVE APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTIONS.

Approval of this item will support the Board's Value to cultivate community culture, arts, recreation and life-long learning and the Goal to provide diverse artistic, cultural, educational, and historical amenities and programs that contribute to a vibrant, multi-cultural and economically-viable community.

On June 6, 2017, Agenda Item No. 48, the Board approved the Grant Acceptance Agreement for Phase I for the period of May 1, 2017 to October 31, 2018 and accepted a $1,300 stipend to support program activities. Phase I was held at the Broward County Stirling Road Branch Library selected to participate in the NASA @ My Library initiative. On August 14, 2018, Agenda Item No. 76, the Board approved the Grant Acceptance Agreement for Phase II to be held at the Stirling Road Branch Library for the period of November 1, 2018 to December 31, 2020 and accepted an additional $500 stipend. 

This agreement provides for Phase II of the NASA @ My Library Program to take place at the Margate Catharine Young Branch Library and increases the stipend to $1,500 to implement Phase II activities. The Library will continue providing programs that encourage Science Project Readiness, STEM Community Engagement and the tools and resources to direct the underrepresented minorities in the community down the STEM career pipeline by making STEM fun and interactive on a regular basis. A secondary goal of this project is to increase the comfort level of Broward County librarians with conducting STEM programs independently.

NASA @ My Library is made possible through the support of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Science Mission Directorate as part of its STEM Activation program.

The County's Risk Management Division has reviewed and approved the agreement as to insurance requirements. The County Attorney’s Office has approved this agreement as to form.
