On April 6, 2018, the Trump Administration announced an official "zero-tolerance policy" ("Policy") for offenses under 8 U.S.C. § 1325(a), pursuant to which immigrants entering the Southern Border illegally will be referred for prosecution. The Policy has the effect of separating children from their parents at the border.
It is well documented that the forcible separation of children from their parents has detrimental effects on the health and mental wellbeing of children and parents alike. Through this Resolution, the Board opposes and condemns the Policy as inhumane and directs the County Administrator to transmit a copy of this Resolution to the White House, the United States Attorney General, and the United States Department of Homeland Security.
