Summary Explanation/Background
THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND GROWTH MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

The Florida Department of Health in Broward County (Health Department) operates five special needs shelters on behalf of Broward County during emergency evacuations. These special needs shelters are located in the Enhanced Hurricane Protection Areas within five Broward County schools. Three of these five schools have backup generator power sufficient to operate the air conditioning while two have backup generator power that is not sufficient to power the air conditioning. Per the request of the Health Department, backup generator power sufficient to power the air conditioning in these two shelters is needed during the current hurricane season.

The estimate from the Broward County School Board indicates the cost for two generator rentals for five months is $150,000, with approximately $50,000 in additional costs if the generators are needed, for a total expenditure of up to $200,000.

Federal Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funding is being sought as part of the current funding cycle to provide a more permanent solution for full generator power at the special needs shelters in the future.
