Requested Action

MOTION TO ADOPT budget Resolution No. 2018-279 transferring funds within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund (LETF) for the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) in the amount of $13,200 for the purpose of providing funds for the 2018 Fun and Safety in the Sun Summer Camp.

ACTION:  (T-10:24 AM)  Approved.
 
VOTE: 7-0.  Commissioners LaMarca and Ryan were not present.

Why Action is Necessary
Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes. Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are necessary to appropriate LETF funds.

Summary Explanation/Background
The Broward Sheriff's Office supports this LETF request for 2018 Fun and Safety in the Sun Summer Camp. The Broward Municipal Services District Park Service is hosting the 2018 Fun and Safety in the Sun Summer Camp which is an interactive program that will provide Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) along with other safety components. The BSO Central Broward District will be engaging approximately 1,200 youths from the Broward Municipal Services District allowing them the opportunity to enhance their social skills, giving them alternatives to less than desirable or destructive activities, adding structure for the summer months and will end with a gun violence symposium.

Fiscal Impact/Cost Summary:
Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for this action. According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of May 18, 2018 is $3,997,051 in the local account ($2,654,115 of which is unrestricted) and $5,191,567 in the federal account ($2,239,863 of which is unrestricted). This action will utilize $13,200 in unrestricted local funds.
