THE ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND GROWTH MANAGEMENT DEPARTMENT AND THE ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
Approval of this item supports the Commission’s Value of “Encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection” and Goal 3: Increase water quality protection efforts and lead creative approaches to water storage and aquifer recharge, as well as diversification of water supplies, regionally, and Goal 4: Educate, through a variety of means, about the fragile South Florida ecosystems and impacts of severe weather, sea level rise and climate change on the region; by hosting this annual event to promote environmental education and resource conservation throughout Broward County.
This item recognizes the cost share support provided by event sponsors to promote and host the 2018 Water Matters Day, an event which draws thousands of residents annually.
Hosting of Water Matters Day 2018 resulted in costs of $21,450 that were budgeted for expenditure and are reflected in the Budget Resolution (Exhibit 1). Sponsorships were received from public and private partners in accordance with Advantage Marketing Guidelines and included support from the Broward Workshop, Central Broward Water Control District, City of Cooper City, City of Fort Lauderdale, City of Coconut Creek, Town of Davie, City of Sunrise, City of Hollywood, Town of Southwest Ranches, Old Plantation Water Control District, South Broward Drainage District, 300 Engineering, Nova Consulting, Carollo Engineers, AECOM, The Chappell Group, Florida Power and Light, and Allstate Resource Management. Costs for Water Matters Day included printing, media purchases, promotional materials, tents, entertainment, security, and other miscellaneous costs.
For the past 15 years, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, along with numerous public and private partners, has supported Water Matters Day, a community educational event that provides Broward County residents with information and tools on how to preserve and protect our water resources. The event helps Broward County residents make the connection between their daily activities and the impact they have on our local water resources and natural environment. The 16th Annual Water Matters Day’s theme of “Water Matters…and Conservation Pays!” focused on the need to conserve water as well as other natural resources and the promotion of NatureScape Broward principles and water resources conservation.
