THE TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT AND TRANSIT DIVISION RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF ABOVE MOTIONS.
This item supports the Board’s Vision and Goals for an Efficient and Accessible Regional Intermodal Transportation Network by improving and enhancing the transit system.
The Broward County Transit Division (BCT) received email notification in October 2017 from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Grants Office, that BCT had been awarded a Fiscal Year 2017 Transit Security Grant in the amount of $596,949 (Exhibit 2). This is a cost-reimbursement, federally-funded agreement, whereby DHS, FEMA, has the authority to grant the funds to Broward County. The agreement is effective from September 1, 2017, through August 31, 2020. The purpose of the Transit Security Grant Program (TSGP) is to assist transit agencies in creating a sustainable, risk-based security program for the protection of transit systems and the traveling public.
BCT will use the 2017 TSGP grant funds to upgrade security equipment (camera systems) on 53 buses with newer technology. The newer camera systems include high definition (HD) Resolution, cloud storage and hosting, as well as the ability to connect remotely over WiFi. It is BCT's intent to upgrade the remaining bus fleet with this newer equipment in the near future utilizing other federal grant funds.
The Fiscal Year 2017 TSGP funds were competitively awarded and BCT's award is 100% funded and does not require matching funds by the County.
