Summary Explanation/Background
PARKS AND RECREATION DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.

This item relates to activities in the Broward Municipal Services District ("BMSD"), which consists of 11.4 square miles with an estimated population of 14,759. The Board of County Commissioners ("Board") is the governing body of the BMSD and the provider of its municipal services, which include, but are not limited to, business development, building permitting and housing development, libraries and parks facilities, roadway maintenance, street enhancements, and zoning and code enforcement.

The Broadview Park Civic Association has requested that the new pocket park located in the BMSD at 1955 Southwest 50th Avenue, Fort Lauderdale, be named “Washburn Park” in memory of Jack and Jan Washburn. The Washburns were instrumental in building the Broadview Park community, having moved there in 1955. They co-founded the neighborhood’s civic association in 1956 and were active for many years. Jack Washburn served as President of the Broadview Park Civic Association, volunteered in the local elementary school and at organizations that provided meals to those in need, and was elected to the Broward County Senior Hall of Fame. He passed away in November 2004. Jan Washburn served her community for decades by providing leadership to the Broadview Park Civic Association, teaching children to swim, tutoring adults for literacy, and advocating for social justice. Ms. Washburn passed away in April 2017. Section 18.43 of the Broward County Administrative Code requires Board approval for naming Broward County-owned property, buildings, structures, and facilities after a thirty day time period to allow for any public input about the proposed name.

If approved, staff will place an item on the Board’s agenda in January 2018 to formally name the facility “Washburn Park.”
