Requested Action
MOTION TO APPROVE Agreement between Broward County and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), Office of Justice Programs (OJP), in the amount of $100,000, from January 1, 2018, through December 31, 2019, for the purpose of  recruiting qualified candidates specialized training in forensic pathology to increase the number of physicians entering the field. Requesting the Mayor to direct the County Administrator to accept and sign the grant and take all necessary administrative and budgetary actions related to the Agreement, and authorizing the County Administrator to execute all amendments that do not exceed a total agreement amount of $100,000. This Agreement requires no County match.

ACTION:  (T-10:45 AM)  Approved.

Why Action is Necessary
Administrative Code of Broward County, Part V.20.31, Federal and State Grants. “Any contract required to be executed by Broward County in order to receive a grant, shall be submitted to the Board of County Commissioners for approval.”
What Action Accomplishes
This grant will provide an funds for salary and training expenses for a Resident Medical Examiner (Fellow) to train in forensic pathology during the two year grant period.

Summary Explanation/Background
THE OFFICE OF MEDICAL EXAMINER AND TRAUMA SERVICES RECOMMEND APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE ACTION.

The item supports furthering the awareness of forensic pathology and the national need for more physicians to come into this specialty due to strong demand for qualified forensic  pathologists.

The National Institute of Justice (NIJ), Department of Justice has created this funding opportunity to address an extreme shortage of board-certified forensic pathologists in the United States.

The NIJ may elect to provide additional funding in future years to awards made under this solicitation, through supplemental awards.

The Office of Medical Examiner and Trauma Services has a physician identified to start on July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2019 and another being evaluated now to start July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2020.
