Requested Action
MOTION TO ADOPT budget Resolution No. 2017-503 within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for the Broward Sheriff's Office in the amount of $167,165 for the purpose of supporting the Narcotics Detection Dog Program.

ACTION:  (T-10:45 AM)  Approved.
 
VOTE: 9-0.  Commissioners Geller and Holness voted in the affirmative telephonically. 
Why Action is Necessary
Florida Statutes 932.7055(5)(a) requires that proceeds from the disposition of liens and forfeited property obtained from criminal procedure and corrections be deposited in a special law enforcement trust fund to be used for law enforcement purposes. Recommendation of the Sheriff and Board approval are necessary to appropriate LETF funds.

Summary Explanation/Background
The Broward Sheriff's Office supports this LETF request for the Narcotics Detection Dog Program. The Narcotics Detection Dog Program works in conjunction with law enforcement entities that are investigating criminal cases in the South Florida area, specific to Broward County. The Program targets individuals and criminal organizations committing illegal activity by establishing probable cause that subsequently results in arrests and seizure of assets associated with their criminal activity.

Funds are available within the Law Enforcement Trust Fund for these actions. According to BSO, the current balance of the LETF, as of October 23, 2017 is $4,810,430 in the local account ($3,369,423 of which is unrestricted) and $5,402,026 in the federal account ($2,511,211 of which is unrestricted). This action will utilize $167,165 in unrestricted federal funds.
