PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION AND ENGINEERING DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL
These items support the Board of County Commissioners' Value of "cooperatively delivering an efficient and accessible regional intermodal transportation network" with the Goal of supporting "the development, design and construction of sustainable, multi-modal transportation facilities throughout the County, to meet the demands of residents, travelers, and businesses."
As part of its 2040 Long Range Transportation Plan, the Broward County Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) initiated the Complete Streets and Other Localized Initiatives Program to provide grant funding opportunities for local agencies to develop mobility and Complete Streets-oriented projects. The program is intended to fast track construction of bicycle, pedestrian, transit, and other local roadway improvements that are eligible for expedited Federal review. The MPO recognizes that most projects eligible for funding by this program require the support of and partnership between multiple governmental entities in order to be successful. To ensure that appropriate governmental agencies are supportive of the projects, the MPO is requiring that each grant application include Resolutions of support from the elected bodies of the agencies that own or maintain the roadways.
Motion A. NW 19th Street from NW 31st Avenue to Powerline Road is a County road located in the City of Fort Lauderdale. It is currently a four-lane road with a two-way left turn lane. The County intends to submit a grant application to the MPO program to fund pedestrian safety improvements on this street that will include raised landscaped medians, upgraded pedestrian scale lighting, milling and resurfacing, and a midblock crossing.
Motion B. Davie Boulevard Extension/Peters Road from SW 51st Avenue to State Road 7 is a County road located in the Broward Municipal Services District and in the City of Plantation. It is currently a four-lane road with a two-way left turn lane. The County intends to submit a grant application to the MPO program to fund pedestrian safety improvements on this street that will include raised medians, milling and resurfacing, and enhanced pedestrian crossings.
The County's Complete Streets Team has reviewed the proposed improvements and supports the implementation of these projects. The County will continue to own and maintain the roads after construction of the proposed improvements.
Approval of Motions A and B will formally affirm County's support of the projects and will comply with the MPO's requirement for inclusion of the Resolutions as part of the County's grant application.
The Resolutions have been reviewed and approved as to form by the Office of the County Attorney.
