This action supports the Board's value of encouraging investments in renewable energy, sustainable practices and environmental protection: Goal 1: Seek funding for, implement policies and pursue projects promoting, the use of alternative energies and sustainable practices. Funding of a tree giveaway achieves the goal of sustainable practices by increasing the County's tree canopy.

The Naturescape Broward Program has submitted a request for funding from the Broward County Tree Preservation Trust Fund (Fund) in the amount of $18,000 for the purchase of trees for the annual Water Matters Day Tree Giveaway to be held on March 10, 2018. The funding will be used for the purchase of approximately 1,500 trees to be given away to the public at the event. The Fund has previously been used to fund the following Water Matters Day Tree Giveaways: 2005 ($25,575), 2006 ($4,126), 2007 ($28,374), 2010 ($14,445), 2011 ($16,415), 2012 ($22,650), 2014 ($18,900), 2015 ($21,442), 2016 ($23,050), and 2017 ($23,775). The Countywide portion of the Fund (funds allocated for countywide use) currently contains approximately $68,454.00 in unobligated funds (Exhibit 1).
