THE LIBRARIES DIVISION RECOMMENDS APPROVAL OF THE ABOVE MOTION.
The above motion is consistent with the Board’s Value of “Ensuring economic opportunities for all people and businesses in Broward” and the Goal to "Improve access to business development, educational, cultural, and recreational opportunities and amenities to the economically disadvantaged."
On April 4, 2017, (Item No. 46), the Board authorized a pilot project with T-Mobile and formally accepted a donation of 300 Tablets for the Bridging the Digital Divide Project specifically for the Broward Municipal Services District. On June 13, 2017, Agenda Item No. 56, the Board formally accepted an additional donation of 160 Tablets to broaden the reach of the Bridging the Digital Divide Project. With the additional donation of 90 Android Alcatel 8-inch Tablets, the program will remain focused on providing this resource to those residents that have a demonstrated need; those seeking employment; residents that fall within low income guidelines; or residents who are receiving or are eligible to receive means tested benefits.
On May 9, 2017, (Item No. 36), the Board formally accepted a donation of 450 Alcatel Hotspots to support the Libraries Division’s Veterans Connect project. Currently 50 Hotspots are available in each Commission District for borrowing. With this donation of an additional 90 Alcatel Hotspots, the Libraries Division will be able to expand the Veterans Connect project, which provides wireless internet connectivity to veterans, active service members, and their dependents.
Additional funding will not be required to provide monthly service for these devices at T-Mobile’s discounted rates, due to the County’s implementation of mobile device management software.
