On January 26, 2015, Plaintiff Starla Edwards was driving her vehicle southbound on NW 56th Avenue near its intersection with West Oakland Park Boulevard, within the City of Lauderhill, Florida. Ms. Edwards had stopped her vehicle to allow pedestrians to cross the street when a transit bus rear-ended her vehicle. Ms. Edwards claims to have sustained multiple injuries, primarily to her lower back. In May 2015, after undergoing several months of conservative treatments, Ms. Edwards underwent surgery to her lower back. She has agreed to release Broward County from all claims arising from this accident and to accept $71,500, inclusive of attorney's fees and costs, subject to approval by the Board of County Commissioners.
