THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT/SOLID WASTE AND RECYCLING SERVICES RECOMMENDS APPROVAL.
In 2002, Broward County entered into a five-year interlocal agreement with the City of Pembroke Pines to treat and dispose of leachate from the Broward County Landfill at the City’s wastewater treatment plant. The agreement has since been extended twice with five-year extensions. The most recent extension was approved by the Board of County Commissioners on May 22, 2012 (Item No. 14) which terminates on June 18, 2017.
County staff has been in discussion with City staff for a new, long-term leachate treatment and disposal agreement. County staff has prepared a draft agreement and it is currently being reviewed by the City. The proposed motion asks the Board of County Commissioners to delegate authority to the County Administrator to enter into a new agreement, upon approval by the City of Pembroke Pines’ City Commission, or an extension to the existing agreement for up to six months to allow continued negotiations for a new, long-term agreement.
